Depression and Low Mood

You wake up, and the weight is already there. Not always dramatic. Sometimes it is simply an absence. A flatness where motivation used to be, or a quiet withdrawal from the things and people you once enjoyed.

Depression does not always look the way people expect it to. It can show up as irritability, difficulty concentrating, physical fatigue, or a sense that nothing really matters. And when it has been present long enough, it starts to feel like part of who you are rather than something that can shift.

It can shift. With the right support, it does.

How Psychotherapy Helps With Depression

Therapy for depression is not about being told to think more positively. It is about creating a space where the roots of your low mood can be explored safely. Often, depression is connected to earlier experiences, to loss, to patterns in relationships, or to parts of yourself that have been pushed aside for too long.

Prof Knight works psychodynamically, which means she helps you to look beneath the symptoms. What is the sadness connected to? What purpose has the withdrawal been serving? What would it mean to allow yourself to feel something different?

These are not questions with easy answers, but they are the questions that lead to lasting change rather than surface-level relief.

What to Expect

Sessions take place at the N.H.C Health Centre in Honeydew, Johannesburg. The frequency and duration of therapy will depend on your circumstances and will be discussed at your initial consultation. Prof Knight works with each client individually to determine what feels right.

There is no expectation to have everything figured out before you arrive. Therapy begins exactly where you are.
